Use it once. Give it twice.

As a couple who spent most of their working life in academics, Maynard (B.A., 1968) and Jean Lowry never made a lot of money. They were careful and saved systematically. They each established an IRA and contributed to a 403 (b) plan. These will provide important supplemental income during their retirement. These retirement assets will also be the source of a legacy gift Maynard and Jean intend will increase an endowed scholarship fund they've set up at Andrews University.

Maynard and Jean got inspiration for their gift from Harold and Jean Boyd, Jean's parents. Both graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) in 1926. Each took pre-med and subsequently graduated from the College of Medical Evangelists (now Loma Linda University). Harold went on to become a well known orthopedic surgeon with an international reputation. The Boyd's often expressed that EMC gave them their start. It's where they met.

Jean was a Battle Creek girl. Her father was a physician colleague of John Harvey Kellogg. Harold, came to Berrien Springs from Panama, where his parents were missionaries. He earned his way at the College Wood Products in the days when they made screen doors. He worked many extra hours his first year, anticipating the time he would spend in labs his second year.

Harold was alumnus of the year at the College of Medical Evangelists in 1953 and an honored alumnus at Andrews University in 1974.

Maynard and Jean have established the Harold Buhalts and Jean Stewart Boyd Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor their parents' memory and legacy. They have also established a testamentary charitable trust that will be funded by their retirement plan assets some day. Their family will benefit, too, as their son will be the income beneficiary of the trust for several years. Eventually, their parents' endowed scholarship fund at Andrews University will receive the remainder of the trust. Science and math students will benefit from this fund for years to come.

Maynard has worked in academic philanthropy for the past decade. He says that it has become clear to him that you can use your retirement plan in several very good ways. You can use it to retire on. You can give your family an income stream. And you can give the remainder to your favorite charity as well. Use it once. Give it twice!
